Internship Program
Test drive a career in the arts!
Students from a variety of academic backgrounds are invited to apply for an internship at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Opportunities abound, with your choice of assignment in nearly every museum department. No matter which avenue you explore, you’ll find yourself amidst world-class art collections and advised by museum professionals. Working on various assignments, you'll even take part in furthering the Atheneum's mission to bring the best in art to the Hartford community.
Eligibility: Internships are available to undergraduate and graduate students, recently graduated students eager to gain museum experience, and museum professionals interested in career changes or are currently in-between positions. Preference is given to candidates who have completed at least two years of undergraduate coursework.
Availability: Internships are offered during the fall and spring semesters, as well as in the summer. Internship availability is dependent upon departmental requests. With special consideration given to the applicant’s placement preferences, interns are assigned to the department that best suits their academic background, professional experience, career aspirations, and passion.
Internships are available in the following departmental areas:
Curatorial • Archives Education Institutional Advancement • Special Events Library Museum Design • Art Handling Museum Shop Public Relations and Marketing • Collection Imaging Registration Visitor Services
Responsibilities: Interns participate in the ongoing work of the department to which they are assigned and are expected to complete a project or some portion of a major project. Specific responsibilities are determined by the current needs of the department, as well as the educational background and work experience of the intern.
Spring and fall interns work approximately 12 hours/week, 120 hours/semester. Summer interns work 20 hours/week for 8 to 10 weeks. The number of hours per week worked will ultimately be determined by departmental need, the intern’s academic schedule, and the academic requirements that govern the receipt of credit for the internship (if applicable).
Internships do not carry a stipend; living arrangements are the intern's responsibility to coordinate.
Application Requirements:
